Introducing our 2021-2022 Board Candidates
MASE President-Elect Statement
Marcy Doud Assistant Superintendent of Specialized Services Saint Paul Public Schools 360 Colborne Street St. Paul, MN 55102-3299 651-767-8321 [email protected] |
I am humbled by the nomination to serve an organization that supports and builds current and future Directors of Special Education. MASE has provided a platform for professionals to come together to learn, reflect, and grow. For over 20 years, I feel blessed to have shared this space with those that have paved the way and those that are new to the organization.
My career started as an outdoor recreational therapist and I eventually found my way to public education. For the past 19 years, I have served as an administrator in special education, and I am currently the Assistant Superintendent of Specialized Services for St. Paul Public Schools. In my administrative journey, I have discovered a passion for special education finance, public speaking, and strategic planning. I have appreciated the opportunity to share and learn as a co-presenter in MASE's Boot Camps and a member on MASE’s legislative committee.
It would be my pleasure to serve as Present-Elect of MASE, an organization that has supported my leadership development over the years. Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to representing MASE and its mission.

MASE Treasurer Statement
Dave Haveman Executive Director of Services | Director of Special Education Creatively Focused 1155 Centre Pointe Drive Suite 6 Mendota Heights, MN 55120 612-226-4914 [email protected] |
When presented with the idea of running for MASE leadership, I was humbled to be considered for this important role. MASE provides so many important avenues for growth and impact within our field of work, and I believe I would bring a set of unique experiences to this team with my varied roles and background.
My 20+ years in the field of education started with teaching for both an intermediate district (917) and a large urban district (SPPS) in the low-incidence field of blind/VI. As a special education administrator, my career started in 2006 in South Washington County Schools. From there I transitioned to director of special education work in charter schools across the state, serving both the Twin Cities and Bemidji areas for 5 years. In 2014, I was the director of special services for Hastings Public Schools, where I directed a variety of domains and staff for six years.
Recently I joined the team at Creatively Focused, where I am able to combine past experiences within a larger scope as the executive director of services. Creatively Focused provides contracted and consulting services to any type of district, and we currently contract to work with charters, traditional and intermediates. As a regular part of my current role, I'm counted on to partner with education and businesses to address a "greater good" for our field of work. I'd be following leaders at MASE who have established these types of partnerships and continuing this work for the organization. I have been an active member of MASE, have personally benefited from the support both organizationally and from specific members, and would love an opportunity to contribute if my gifts and experience would be helpful to the organization and to our colleagues.

MASE Treasurer Statement -Incumbent
Scott Masten Director of Special Education Lake Agassiz Education Cooperative PO Box 628 Hawley, MN 56549 888-267-5380 [email protected] |
As your incumbent MASE treasurer for the past two years, I’m honored to once again be nominated for the position. It’s been a blessing to work with amazing people at the committee, board, and executive team levels. Collectively, we’ve been able to expand the services and supports we offer through the organization while continuing to grow MASE’s fund balance. While these outcomes couldn’t have been possible without the dedication of others, I’m fortunate to have been an active participant in the organization’s growth. We’ve expanded professional development opportunities for our members, enhanced the business partnership program, worked with MDE to establish a direct line of communication before/during the COVID-19 pandemic, created out-of-state membership opportunities, advocated on your behalf legislatively, updated existing model contracts, lowered membership fees for specific subgroups (student/retiree), locked membership fees for all others and currently are completing a comprehensive director contract study.
The above list is by no means exhaustive, but the efforts have created pronounced outcomes. Our total membership is at an all-time high, the business partnership program has expanded substantially, our collective state-wide impact has grown, and the fund balance continues to touch record levels.
I’m truly grateful to be nominated again after serving in this capacity for the past two years. My previous MASE experiences (new leader’s cohort graduate, membership on various committees, Area C Board Representative, co-chair of the Business Partnership Committee, 2021 New Leader of the Year, and Treasurer) will serve as a springboard for my continued positive impact on the organization. Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to the opportunity to serve MASE and the mission of building strong leaders who work on behalf of students with disabilities.
