MASE in Your Mailbox - April 10, 2026

MASE News,

From the Executive Director,
Erin Toninato:

I'm not the smartest fellow in the world, but I can sure pick smart colleagues. ~Franklin D. RooseveltThe Work Is Complex, but We Are Not Doing It Alone

This time of year always seems to turn into a bit of a travel season for me—and it never quite spaces itself out evenly. Instead, visits tend to land in little “seasons” on the calendar. Over the past two weeks, I’ve had the chance to spend time in three different areas across the state, connecting with many of you—and truly, that time FILLS MY BUCKET.

There’s something about being together that just feels good—watching teams share resources, support one another, problem-solve in real time, and yes…laugh together. It’s a good reminder that while the work is complex, we are not doing it alone.

At one point, I found myself sitting in a restaurant by myself—something I’ve learned to embrace over time (trust me, I didn’t always feel that way). Now…it feels like a quiet moment to pause and take it all in.

Each visit brings new perspectives and connections. And while living in the southwest corner of the state means these trips often come with long drives, it’s a part of the experience I’ve really come to appreciate.

I’m leaving this stretch of visits feeling grateful for the time together and the connections we share. Thank you for having me!

As always, thanks for all you do...

MASE 2026 Legislative Platform ThumbnailThe MASE Legislative Committee, working with lobbyist Valerie Dosland, has created our Legislative Platform for this session of the Minnesota Legislature. With many important issues facing Special Education this year, read the platform so you’re aware of the issues our team will focus on. Key focus areas are fair and sustainable funding (including repeal of the $250 million cut to special education cross-subsidy aid), and flexible and supportive policy—especially pertaining to special educator recruitment and retention as well as safe and secure school environments.
