National Recognition and Awards
As a Council of Administrators for Special Education (CASE) state unit, MASE and its members have earned a number of awards over the years.

2025
CASE State Unit Award for Professional Development, for demonstrating excellence in designing and delivering high-quality professional development that fosters growth, learning, and leadership among members while advancing the mission of CASE.
CASE State Unit Award for Communications, with a special highlight on our weekly MASE in Your Mailbox. This award identifies the state subdivision that produces communication publications of great value to its membership.
2024
CASE State Unit Award for Membership Growth. At the end of each year, CASE calculates membership growth for each state and province. CASE had 31 state subdivisions that ended 2024 with higher membership than 2023! Minnesota was one of the 31 at 10% growth! CASE provided us with a membership growth badge!
CASE State Unit Award for Communications, with a special highlight on our weekly MASE in Your Mailbox. This award identifies the state subdivision that produces communication publications of great value to its membership.

2023
CASE State Unit Award for Membership Growth, recognizing a 17% membership increase from 2022 to 2023.
2022
CASE State Unit Award for Professional Development. This award identifies the State Unit where a chairperson and committee have developed and implemented a strategy to focus professional development on the needs of the unit. CASE specifically called out our New Leaders Program and SLICE.
2021
CASE State Unit Award for Awards. This award identifies the State Unit that has sponsored a variety of award programs recognizing the exceptional work and contribution of its members. Activities that MASE provided as evidence of unique and innovative activities in this area included the MASE President Scholarship, Stenswick-Benson Scholarship Fund and our annual award presentations.
2004
CASE State Unit Award for Exemplary Unit. This award identifies the State Unit that has not only demonstrated strong performance in the areas of Awards, Communication, Legislative, Membership, and Professional Development, but also demonstrates involvement in the promotion of CASE within its State Unit. There is a demonstrated pattern of support for CEC and CASE at the state and national levels. This designation reflects strong leadership development to have maximum influence in the field of Special Education.
2002
CASE State Unit Award for Exemplary Unit. This award identifies the State Unit that has not only demonstrated strong performance in the areas of Awards, Communication, Legislative, Membership, and Professional Development, but also demonstrates involvement in the promotion of CASE within its State Unit. There is a demonstrated pattern of support for CEC and CASE at the state and national levels. This designation reflects strong leadership development to have maximum influence in the field of Special Education.

Cherie Johnson, past MASE President and Minnesota Special Education Director was presented the CASE Harrie M. Selznick Distinguished Service Award for 2024.
2023
Dr. Sarah Mittelstadt, past MASE President and Minnesota Special Education Director, was presented the CASE Outstanding Administrator of Special Education for 2023.
2021
John Klaber, former Executive Director of MASE and Minnesota Special Education Director, was presented the CASE Harrie M. Selznick Distinguished Service Award for 2021.
Cherie Johnson, past MASE President and Minnesota Special Education Director, was presented the CASE Outstanding Administrator of Special Education for 2021.
2018
Jill Skarvold, past MASE President and Minnesota Special Education Director, was presented the CASE Outstanding Administrator of Special Education for 2018.
2004
Nan Records, past CEC CAN Coordinator and Minnesota Special Education Director, was presented the CASE Outstanding Administrator of Special Education for 2006.
2002
Dr. Bob Fischer, former Director of Finance at the Minnesota Department of Education, was presented the CASE Outstanding Administrator of Special Education for 2002.
