MASE News,

From the Executive Director,
Erin Toninato:

Hammer and chisel on MN Dept of Education logoMoving OSERS Out of the Department of Education

Over the past several weeks, it has felt like there has been no shortage of "noise" in our profession. Legislative updates, budget conversations, federal announcements, staffing challenges—the information just keeps coming.

One of the most significant announcements this week was the decision to move the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS), including the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), from the Department of Education to the Department of Health and Human Services.

While there are still many unanswered questions, the concern for many in the field is that special education has always been rooted in education. For more than 50 years, IDEA has focused on students with disabilities as learners first, and many are watching closely to see how this transition may impact that focus moving forward. If you would like to learn more about this announcement and other federal updates, please read the CASE section of this week's MIYM.

As we continue to monitor developments and share information, I also want to offer a simple reminder. Sometimes when things get noisy, the best thing we can do is step away for a bit.

This week I did exactly that. I spent a couple days camping in our little 16-foot Scamp camper. Although I envisioned loafing around in a chair soaking up vitamin D, Mother Nature had plans of her own. Much of the trip involved listening to rain bounce off the roof. Fortunately, it gave me time to practice my newest hobby—rock painting. I'm not sure I've developed enough skill to open an Etsy shop anytime soon, but it was a welcome change from emails, headlines, and policy updates.

Whether it's camping, a walk, time with family, a cup of coffee on the deck, or another activity that helps you recharge, I hope you find an opportunity to step away from the noise this summer. The work will still be here when you return.

As always...thank you for all you do.

Today is Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and reminds us of the ongoing work to ensure freedom, opportunity, and belonging for all.

As educators and leaders, we know that creating environments where every student feels valued and supported is both important and ongoing work. As we recognize Juneteenth, may we continue learning from our history while remaining committed to creating opportunities for every student to thrive.
