MASE News,

From the Executive Director,
Erin Toninato:

Arrows pointing in all directions

Are Things Coming at You from All Directions?

Happy Friday to you all. Have you had weeks where it feels like things seem to come at you from every direction?

This has been one of those weeks—the perfect combination of many things happening both professionally and personally. If I’m being honest, it has felt like I’m probably not doing any of it as well as I would like; it feels like I wasn’t able to show up at 100%. As I reflect on it, it doesn’t feel great.

At the same time, there are really good things ahead and I am shifting my focus to those!

Next week is our Best Practices Conference, and I am SO excited to spend time with all of you. Being with MASE members totally refills my bucket. After the conference, I’ll head home to a house full of company. We will be hosting some family coming in to celebrate our granddaughter’s graduation, which feels joyful and hard to believe all at once!

At the moment, approximately 47 things in my brain feel unfinished. I am fully confident that somewhere between the time I leave for the conference and the time I return home, my husband will have quietly done all the “things.” I will walk into a house full of people and will be carrying nothing but gratitude.

Maybe that is just life sometimes. Full schedules. Full hearts. Moments where we are stretched thin while also being deeply grateful for the people filling those spaces.

So if this week has felt a little messy or imperfect on your end too, just know we are in it together.

As always...thank you for all you do.

With many important issues facing Special Education this year, read the platform so you’re aware of the issues our team will focus on. Key focus areas are fair and sustainable funding (including repeal of the $250 million cut to special education cross-subsidy aid), and flexible and supportive policy—especially pertaining to special educator recruitment and retention as well as safe and secure school environments.

FY 2027 PELSB Seeks Reviewers for PPG

Legislation for a Pathway Preparation Grant was created and $400,000 in funding was appropriated by the Minnesota legislature for state fiscal year 2027. The purpose of the grant is to support Tier 1 and Tier 2 teachers seeking a Tier 3 or Tier 4 license through completion of a teacher preparation program or the licensure via portfolio process. Grant funding is available to school districts, charter schools, education service cooperatives, and partnerships between one or more teacher preparation providers and school districts or charter schools.

PELSB is currently seeking reviewers for grant applications, which are due May 15, 2026. Reviewers must be able to complete the duties of the position, and will receive a $200 stipend to offset the time and expense involved with attending a training session, reviewing and scoring approximately 5-10 proposals, and participating in grant training and a grant review meeting.
